The predecessor of School of Foreign Languages in Nanchang University was the Foreign Language Department of Jiangxi University (founded in 1975). Now the school consists of three departments, two centers, a institute and a base: English Language and Literature Department, Asian-European Language and Literature Department, College English Teaching Department, English and American Literatures Research Center, Translators' Research Center of Nanchang University, Foreign Languages Research Institute and Translation Base of Jiangxi, which offer five undergraduate programs (English, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish) and three MA programs (English language and literature, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, and MTI). The in-campus enrollments include 94 postgraduates and 1,527 undergraduates. Currently, the school has a staff of 222 members, among whom are 10 full professors, 60 associate professors, 13 supervisors for MA students, one entitled Provincially Renowned College Teacher, one with provincial award of Young-and-Middle-Aged Leading Academic Figure, 5 Provincial Young-and-Middle-Aged Key Teachers. This school employs 12 foreign guest professors and on-campus foreign teachers specialized in English, Japanese, German, and French. Among the full-time teachers, 7 are doctors, 42 are candidates for doctoral degree, 108 are with MA degree, and 12 are returned overseas scholars. This school is also entitled to confer MA degree to part-time learners of MA programs. In addition, the school offers foreign languages courses (English, Japanese, German, French, Russian and so on) to non-foreign language majors on all the levels from undergraduate to doctorate programs.
This School is adequately equipped with modern and sophisticated learning, teaching and research facilities, including 42 digitalized audio-studios (2,018 seats in total), 6 digitalized Automatic Learning centers (530 seats in total), 2 visual studios, 6 English radio stations, and 2 recording studios. It is also in possession of a library which collects more than 33,000 books and more than 50 Chinese and foreign academic journals.
The faculties of this school have published many monographs, teaching materials, research papers and have carried out a considerable number of research projects, including four State Social Science Funds projects.
